1917 is based on the true story of Mendes' grandfather,[5] about two young British soldiers at the height of World War I who are tasked with delivering a message to the 2nd Battalion, warning about the German ambush if they carry out a pre-planned attack. This mission became even more important when the brother of one of them was in the first wave of the 2nd Battalion. Two young British soldiers during the First World War are given an impossible mission: deliver a message deep in enemy territory that will stop 1,600 men, and one of the soldiers brothers, from walking straight into a deadly trap.
